Freedom

Every year around the Fourth of July, I find myself reflecting on the word freedom.

As Americans, we celebrate the remarkable blessings of living in a country founded on liberty. We honor those who sacrificed so much to preserve the freedoms we often take for granted—the freedom to worship, to speak, to work, to dream, and to pursue a life of purpose.

Those freedoms are precious. Their meaning is very important to me.

But over the years, I've come to realize there is another kind of freedom that is just as important.

It's the freedom that comes from no longer carrying the weight of your past.

There was a time in my life when I confused freedom with doing whatever I wanted. I believed independence meant answering only to myself. Looking back, I now understand that living without boundaries isn't freedom at all. In many ways, it became its own form of bondage.

Real freedom isn't found in doing whatever we please.

It's found in living the way God intended us to live.

That lesson wasn't easy for me to learn. It came through consequences, humility, and ultimately, God's grace.

One of the reasons I wrote my book was to tell that story honestly. Much has been written about my life over the years, but the greatest chapter wasn't about the mistakes—it was about discovering that God's grace is greater than them.

As I grow older, I appreciate freedom differently than I once did.

I appreciate the freedom to gather with family and friends.

The freedom to worship openly.

The freedom to share my faith.

The freedom to tell my story.

And perhaps most of all, the freedom that comes from knowing I no longer have to define my life by my worst decisions.

For that, I thank God.

This Independence Day reminded me that while we celebrate the freedoms secured by brave men and women throughout our nation's history, there is another freedom available to every one of us—the freedom found in forgiveness, grace, and a life surrendered to God's will.

May we never take either one for granted.
